Brief Introduction
 

I. Main contents of this chapter

Statistics in t his chapt er describe activit ies on the construct ion and purchase of fixed asset s of the whole societ y during
a given period of time, and reflect the size, growth, s tructure, finance and results of t he investment in fixed ass ets during
the reference period.


II. Statistical coverage
Statist ics on t he inves tment in fixed asset s cover the investment in capital const ruction, the investment in innovat ion,
the investment in real estate development, the inves tment in other state-owned fixed assets, the inves tment in fixed
assets by urban collect ive unit s, the investment in fixed as set s by rural collective units, the housing investment by urban
individuals and the investment in fixed assets by rural individuals. Starting from 1999, investment statis tics also include
investment in fixed assets by urban private units and individuals.


III. Sources of data
Data on t he trans-regional projects are provided by t he various departments under the State Council. Dat a on the
investment in fixed assets in collective units and by individuals in rural areas are provided by the Rural Socio-economic
Survey Organization of NBS through its rural social and economic survey. Other data on the investment in fixed asset s are
from the survey s conducted by the Department of Statistics of Inves tment in Fixed Assets , NBS.


IV. Method of data collection
All data on t he inves tment in fixed as sets are collect ed by the s tatistical reporting system with complete enumeration,
except data on the investment in fixed assets in collective units and by individuals in rural areas, which are collected through
sample surveys.


V. Since 1997, t he cut-off point of projects t o be covered in the investment statis tics are modified from an inves tment of
50,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan in the statistics of investment in capital construction, inves tment in innovation and other
investments , while the cut-off point of p roject s in the s tat istics of investment in real estate development, rural collect ive
investment and individual investment remain unchanged. For the convenience of comparison, relevant data of 1996 are
adjusted accordingly, and figures in brackets are compiled on the basis of the old coverage.
