Data on tourism mainly include: number of travel agencies, number of employees in travel agencies, number of tourist
-hotels, total number of international tourists received (foreigners, overseas Chinese, Chinese compatriots from Hong Kong,
Macao and Taiwan), Chinese residents going abroad, (urban and from rural areas), number of domestic tourists (from urban
and rural areas), and income from international and domestic tourism.

II. St atistical Scope

Data in this chapt er include both international and domestic tourism.

III. Sources of Data

Data in this chapter are compiled by the Department of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of the National Bureau of Statis
tics on the basis of data from t he Ministry of Public Security and St ate Tourism Administ ration. Sources of data are as
follows: number of international tourists entering into China and Chinese residents going abroad is p rovided by the Frontier
Administrat ion of the Minis try of Public Security; number of international t ourist s received by province, number of int
ernational tourists received by travel agency, number of domes tic tourists and earnings from domestic tourism are provided
by the State Tourism Administ ration; figures on the earnings from international tourism before 1994 are provided by the
Department of Trade and Foreign Economic Relat ions Statist ics of the National Bureau of St atis tics using data on t he exp
enditure of Foreign Exchange Certificates by int ernational tourists, and since 1994, by t he State Tourism Adminis tration;
data on basic situation of travel agencies and tourist hotels are provided the State Tourism Administ ration.

IV. Survey Methodology

Data on the earnings from international and domest ic tourism and on domestic tourists are collected from sample surveys,
while statistics on other items are from comprehensive reporting system.
