Brief Introduction

I. Main contents of this chapter
Data in this chapt er cover mainly the energy product ion and consumption and their composit ion, the elasticity ratio of
energy production and consumption, the overall balance of energy and the balance by different types of energy, the
consumption of energy by sect or and by types of energy, efficiency of energy conversion and the consumpt ion of energy for
non-production uses.

II. Data in this chapter cover the whole society.

III. Source of data
Data in Table 7-1 are calculated on the basis of statistics on output of indust rial products, data in Table 7-14 come from the
Association of Power Generation Enterprises, and data in other tables in this chapter are from the energy balance sheets over
the years.

IV. Notes on the coverage and calculation of data:

(1) The dat a on the production of primary energy are the same as the concerned data of the indus trial statistics.

(2) The elasticity ratio of energy production is calculated as t he quotient of t he growt h rate of energy production divided
by the growth rat e of GDP; and t he elast icit y ratio of energy consumption is calculated as the quotient of the growth rat e
of energy consumption divided by the growth rate of GDP.

(3) In the energy balance, the data on t he imports and exports are data from the customs statistics. The refueling by
Chinese ships and airplanes abroad is included in the imports. The refueling by foreign ships and airp lanes in China is
included in the exports . The coefficient for conversion of electric power into the standard coal equivalent is calculated
according to the average consumption of coal for generating electricity.

(4) In the table on the efficiency of energy conversion, the coefficient for conversion of electric power into the standard coal
equivalent is calculated on the basis of heat value equivalent. One kwh is equal to 0.1229 kg SCE.
