Environment Protection

This chapter contain information that reflect the development of environment protection in China, including total water
resources, water supply and utilization, discharge and treatment of industrial and other waste water; urban air quality,
emission and treatment of waste gas; production, treatment and utilization of industrial solid wastes, collection and disposal
of consumption wastes in cities; national monitoring of road traffic noise and  urban environmental noise in key cities; land
use, change in cultivated land, forest resources, afforestation, and forest protection; cases of geological, seismic, marine and
forest disasters, environmental pollution or destruction accidents; investment in environment pollution treatment, etc.

I. Data on environment pollution and treatment of  “three-wastes” from industrial sources and pollutants from consumption
by region are provided by the State Administration of Environment Protection. The coverage of statistics and survey
methodology is as follows:

1)  Coverage of statistics: industrial enterprises and other urban units which discharge pollutants.

2) Survey methodology for discharge and treatment of industrial pollutants: comprehensive survey is conducted on all key
industrial enterprises, while overall estimation is carried out for ordinary enterprises.

Key enterprises refer to those enterprises which discharged more than 85% of all pollutants in the region.  For ordinary
enterprises whose discharge is less than 15% in the total of the region, estimation is made for the volume of their discharge
of waste water, oxygen required substances, ammonia and nitrogen, sulphur dioxide, industrial soot and dust, and solid
wastes. Data on discharge of pollutants of key and ordinary enterprises make up the total discharge of the region.

3) Data on pollution from consumption and other sources are estimated using relevant statistics and technical parameters.

Data on noise monitoring, investment in the treatment of industrial pollution and collection of fees on discharge of pollutants
are provided by the State Administration of Environment Protection.

II. Data on water resources, collection and disposal of urban consumption wastes, land use and change in cultivated land,
forest resources, marine disasters, etc. are provided respectively by Ministry of Water Conservancy, Ministry of Construction,
Ministry of Land and Resources, State Forestry Administration and State Oceanic Administration.
