Brief Introduction
 

I. This chapter consists of two parts: s ummary data on the national economy and data on the s ocial and economic develop-
ment of the minority nationality autonomous areas , w hich are compiled by the Department of Integrated Statis tics of the
Na- tional Bureau of S tatistics and by the State Commiss ion on Eth- nic Affairs respectively.


II. The s ummary data on the national economy highlight the overall situation of the economic and s ocial development by
presenting key s tatistics including growth, structure, ratio and efficiency data derived from other chapters.


III. Data on the minority nationality autonomous areas and the minority nationalities are compos ed of two parts:


(1) D ata collected from the s urveys conducted by areas. A statistical reporting s ystem on the economic and social develop-
ment in the minority nationality autonomous areas has been as- signed jointly by the State Commission on Ethnic Affairs and
the National Bureau of S tatis tics and implemented by the ethnic affairs commissions and the statistical bureaus of 20
provinces and autonomous regions. The reporting system covers all units under the jurisdiction of the 5 minority nationality
autonomous regions, 30 autonomous prefectures and 119 autonomous coun- ties. Duplicated counts are excluded in the
national tabulation. In addition, data on the public health of the minority nationality autonomous areas are provided by the
Ministry of Public H ealth, and data on the divisions of adminis trative areas of the minority nationality autonomous areas are
tabulated and prepared in ac- cordance w ith the Concise Edition of the Divis ions of Adminis- trative Ar eas compiled by the
Minis try of Civil A ffairs.

(2) Data collected from the surveys mainly on the minor-
ity nationalities. They chiefly show the social development of the minority nationalities. Among them, data on the students
and teaching staff of the minority nationalities are provided by the Minis try of Education; data on the excellent athletes and
coaches are provided by the State Sports Administration; and data on the publications of the minority nationality languages
are provided by the Press and Publication A dministration.

IV. The Regulation on the Classification of the Regis tration
Status of En terpris es, jointly developed by the National Bureau of Statistics and the State Industry and Commerce
Administra- tion, has been in use in compiling the annual statistics since 1998.
